Cyclists and triathletes have been experimenting with high carb fuel mixes for a few years but it has largely been mixing their own. Tailwind is now offering two new flavors in a High Carb Fuel product line that is now available to everyone. Ginger Lime and Lemonade are now available as single serve offerings on their site and at retailer partners.

The Science behind High Carb Fuel
What we know behind the science is that carbs are stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles and it’s limited. We also know that they’re much faster to metabolize, especially at higher intensities. The higher the effort the more the body relies on carbs. Glycogen (Carbs) is the primary source of fuel for endurance activities. When it drops too low, athletes hit the wall or bonk, resulting in loss of power, slowing down, and fatigue. This is why athletes rely on additional fuel to top off glycogen levels. Most gels and liquid carbs contain 40-50 grams of carbs per serving. Most are consumed within an hour. Most athletes can consume approximately 60-90 grams of carbs without experiencing any GI issues. A well trained athelete may be able to consume as much as 120 grams. The body can only consume about 60 grams of pure glucose.
A mix of 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio allows Tailwind to create a High Carb Fuel mix containing 90 grams of carbs. It also includes electrolytes to keep athletes hydrated. Tailwind recommends that you train yourself to consume High Carb Fuel if you’re not used to consuming that amount within an hour. Basically, start by drinking 90 grams in 90 mins, and each week decrease your time by 10 minutes so that by week 4 you’re consuming 90 grams in 60 minutes.
Metabolics of High-Carb Fueling
- Delays fatigue: More glycogen available for longer.
- Supports higher intensity: Lets you use fast-twitch fibers effectively.
- Reduces perceived exertion: Stable glucose lowers the sense of effort.
- Improves recovery: Less glycogen depletion means faster post-race rebound.
High-carb fueling is effective because carbohydrates are the body’s most efficient fuel for endurance performance. They keep glycogen topped up, stabilize glucose, and allow athletes to sustain higher intensities for longer before fatigue sets in.
